Description

Course open to BFA1 Experimental Animation students only.

The Program in Experimental Animation embraces the practice of educating students in a broad animation aesthetic. Beginning in the first year, students are encouraged to expand and evolve their skills so they may bring greater expressiveness and innovation to all of their work. Over the course of the semester, students will be introduced to the major processes and additional relevant techniques inherent in the art and craft of drawn animation, multi-plane animation and stop-motion puppet animation. Through lectures and screenings, students will explore animation fundamentals including pose-to-pose, straight ahead, timing, weight, rhythm, composition, design, and performance. Classes will employ a hands-on style workshop approach in which students will be expected to actively create and critique during every class meeting as well as in individual assignments. This structure will help students acquire a direct understanding of each process, as well as the feel and character of each technique.
