Between Dance and Theatre

This advanced class, led by Julie Bour, uses improvisational and compositional skills to guide performers in exploring movement, focusing on key dramaturgical choices such as storytelling, character development, abstraction versus realism and physicality. Students will investigate how time, space, rhythm, and symbolism intersect at the crossroads of dance and theatre, shaping dynamic performances that push the boundaries of both forms.

Students will develop their personal aesthetic, integrate kinesthetic poetry, and engage in collaborative work. Using tools like sound, speech, and objects, they will create material for structured improvisation or composition, refining technique while fostering creativity. The course promotes a playful environment where each discovery leads to new exploration.

Prerequisites:
Advanced stage performance experience.

Students will create a movement-based performance through weekly assignments and creative prompts. By analyzing existing works at the intersection of dance and theatre, they will identify various points of view and explore the scope of possibilities within this fusion of forms. This approach will help them define their own unique methodology for movement-based performance.

Students will expand their artistic vision and refine their personal vocabulary, mastering the ability to tell compelling stories through physical expression. They will make intentional choices to elevate their composition skills, develop a distinctive personal style, and push the boundaries of interdisciplinary performance. By the end of the course, students will create dynamic works that uniquely blend physicality and storytelling.

The course will include studio practice, group discussions, interdisciplinary collaboration, and presentations, allowing students to create, refine, and showcase movement-based performances.
