Description
Students work collectively to develop, rehearse
and record experimental pop music in ensembles of
3-4 students each. Students will explore multiple
approaches to collaboration: from rehearsing and
recording as a live ensemble; to "turn-taking"
overdubbing; to trading songwriting, arranging and
production roles for individually-conceived works.
Each group of students will have three opportunities
to record as a live ensemble in CalArts recording
studios, with significant development and guidance
for both performance and production techniques
from the instructor. For Collaborative Music Ensemble 1, students will receive workshops in improvisation with graphic scores, and working with found and acoustic instruments and will complete 3 recording sessions: 1. Improvising with Graphic Scores 2. Performing a "Cover" Live as an Ensemble using only acoustic or found instruments 3. Original composition
